Meetings are Cool!

Bill Chandler PER as Lecturing KnightBallard, WA:  Past Exalted Ruler night was amazing at the Ballard Elks Lodge #827 last night, February 13th.  Grims Gislason, Past Exalted Ruler, sat in as Exalted Ruler, Anthony Gibbs, Past Exalted Ruler, sat in as Esteemed Leading Knight, Joe Tiffany, Past Exalted Ruler, sat in as Esteemed Loyal Knight and our recently departed Bill Chandler, Past Exalted Ruler, sat in memory in the position of Esteemed Lecturing Knight and was part of his lodge of sorrow as read by the Past Exalted Ruler Grims Gislason.

Ballard rained money over the newly refinished lodge hardwood floor raising funds for the Washington State Tall Elks Therapy Program for Children in that way only Lodge RoomBallard knows how.  Coins jingled and jangled across the floor throughout the meeting, raining down at the alter and over the podiums at times while people attempted to speak…:)

With the 70 or more members in attendance our Past Exalted Ruler worked his way through the massive agenda that included everything from recognizing our departed member Bill Chandler, Past Exalted Ruler, to our Boy Scout troop and Cub Scout pack presenting our charters (as we, the Ballard Elks, are their charter organization) to lodge repairs being approved, 3 new events being approved, a revised lodge By-Laws being presented, 6 Grand Lodge Membership Award Pins and 1 Grand Lodge Watch were presented

Jackpot Winner!

Jackpot Winner!

, 47 Elks National Foundation recurring donor award pins presented, 3 Grand Lodge Grants were approved, exciting committee reports were made and the evening culminated with a member winning the Jackpot of $827!  And not just any member, this member had just been initiated in January and was at her first meeting!  It pays to come to the meetings – it really does.

In the middle of the meeting it was our Past Exalted Rulers time to accept nominations for our 2018/2019 officer positions.  Although many members respectfully declined being nominated to chaired and trustee positions, deferring to personal constraints, the lodge was able to get people nominated for all positions but one.  Please consider stepping up to help your lodge by being an officer.  Your background, views and opinions are needed to help this small group keep our massive organization moving forward.  Come help with a committee if you don’t have the time to dedicate to be an officer.  Every little thing you can do will help your fellow member and your lodge.

So, nominations are;

  • Exalted Ruler – Nestor Tamayao
  • Esteemed Leading Knight – Erik Howes
  • Esteemed Loyal Knight – Sean Reddy
  • Esteemed Lecturing Knight – Cindy Olsby
  • Secretary – Lois Morgensen
  • Treasurer – Tammy Walker
  • 5 Year Trustee – Vacant
  • 4 Year Trustee – Tasha McMullin
  • 3 Year Trustee – Joe Tiffany, Past Exalted Ruler
  • 2 Year Trustee – Arni Thomson
  • 1 Year Trustee – Katie Logan
  • Nominations for positions without anyone nominated for them can happen at the February 27th meeting (GLS 3.080)
    • Nominations need not be seconded and a motion to close nominations is unnecessary. (Opinion 1)
    • Nominees are not required to openly accept a nomination, and need not be present. (Opinion 10)
    • Nominations may be made on election night (February 27th, 2018) only if no nomination for that office has been made or if all candidates for that office have declined or withdrawn. (Opinion 12)

IMG_7011Know that there is a Grand Lodge citation that our lodge can apply for if, and only if, we don’t have a Past Exalted Ruler in an elected or appointed position – and we would love to apply for that citation.  Our Past Exalted Rulers will jump to fill a position left vacant because they each know that without a full governing board the task of running this lodge multiply’s and can become unmanageable.  These members have already put in their time and heart for our lodge, let them step back, guide and help the lodge officers through an active Past Exalted Rulers Association.  Your lodge needs you.

So to recap – The lodge meetings are cool, people have fun, great things happen and you, our members direct our lodge for the future – and could walk away with $827 real American Dollars!  See you on February 27th to help welcome a possible 80 new candidates into our order – yes we have 80 people that should be eligible for initiation on February 27th.

Vocational Scholarships!

Apply for ScholarshipsThe Vocational Scholarship Committee is excited to offer two students (one male, one female) who are graduating high school or receiving their GED this year each a vocational scholarship of $1,000 or more. The scholarship is to help with tuition, fees, books, and materials from a vocational program. Vocational programs can include nursing schools, technical schools (culinary arts, massage therapy, office management, fashion design, etc.).

The top applicants for these vocational scholarships will also be given a chance to win additional vocational scholarship funds at the state level. This is the first year that the Ballard Elks Chapter is offering a local vocational scholarship, designed to help students who are seeking an alternative to traditional college education and can benefit from funding support.

In early January, the committee reached out to several Seattle high schools and provided information to share with students. We look forward to receiving applications and awarding the scholarships this spring.

If you know a student who is interested or has questions about the scholarship, please contact: Melissa Day at

Note: applications are due at the Ballard Elks Lodge by March 2, 2018.

Blood Drive Success!

The blood drive went really well on yesterday and our team enjoyed their time at this drive. We hope everyone had a great experience too.

Blood Drive Results:

  • Total Registered Donors: 27 people
  • We welcomed 2 first-time donors!
  • Units of Blood Collected: 18 units
  • Lives Saved: Since each donation can save up to three lives, the blood that was collected will help save the lives of up to 54 patients in our community.

Please help us share these amazing results and pass along our thanks to everyone for their contribution!

Most importantly, thank you for your efforts to recruit, promote and plan! You are as much a part of our ongoing success as the donors who share this very special, lifesaving gift.

Since you can donate every 56 days, these donors will be eligible to give blood again by December 6th. Normally, we have two blood drives a year – would you be available and interested to increase our frequency? J

Thank you again for your support to our mission!

Join our Kitchen Committee!

There is a new committee idea brewing at the lodge.. and you have an opportunity to get involved and help us form it.

Our lodge has paid kitchen cooks to service the social quarters. But did you know that during most events the kitchen is run completely by volunteers?

The idea is to create a Kitchen Committee that can help with events (Bingo, Initiation Dinners, Veteran’s Day Dinner, Memorial Day Brunch, etc) and keep the kitchen always-ready for the cooks or next volunteer crew. You don’t have to be a chef or even know your way around our kitchen. The committee will create experts out of you.

Here are some ideas that might be incorporated into this new committee:

  • Require a Food Handler’s permit for all volunteers who handle food (easy to get online for $10 after taking a quick online class/test. Must have Flash on computer to do this.)
  • Create a list of kitchen volunteers that event chairs can call on for food serving events.
  • Seek members with the ability to cook, but also develop roles in food prep, serving, clean-up.
  • Maintain organization, cleanliness of kitchen, and documentation.
  • Work with chef to understand best organizational practices so that we don’t make his job harder.
  • Schedule and attend kitchen cleaning and organization “parties” for Elks members to show up and do a good cleaning.

Please email if you would like to get involved.

Jacket Raffle Winners!

Friday evening June 2nd the winning tickets for our Jacket Raffle were pulled in the lounge.  We ultimately sold all 200 tickets!  Thank you everyone who purchased a raffle ticket as you helped us raise $1000 to offset the costs to the lodge from our district and convention officer/member requirements.  The Jackets and patches were graciously donated by our Exalted Rulers wife Jennifer Braden who also worked her fingertips to the bone sewing on the large patches through the durable Dickies jackets – Thank you Jennifer!

WP_20170602_002The first ticket pulled was for our member Mark Dean who excitedly answered the phone call and headed right down to the lodge to pick up his XL Ballard Elks Dickies Jacket.  Congratulations Mark – we know you will wear it proudly!

WP_20170602_003The second ticket pulled was for the XXL jacket and the winner was Jon Anderson, Past Exalted Ruler Lodge #2706 Soldotna, Alaska.  Mr. Anderson also answered his phone and asked if we thought we might make more money if he had us auction it off right then.  We jumped at his gracious offer and were able to raise another $50 from, probably the only guy big enough for the XXL size there that night – Bill!

WP952017060295002With Mr. Anderson’s (PER) generous offer we were able to pull in a total of $1050.00 for the lodge.  Thank you everyone and Thank you again Mrs. Braden – hope you regain feeling in our fingertips soon….:)

WP952017060295004If you have any questions about these jackets and patches, where to get them, etc., please feel free to contact our Exalted Ruler Ben Braden with your questions –
