October finds me with a plethora of members that could be nominated for the Ballard Elks Lodge Elk of the Month. The sheer volume of events and maintenance issues happening around our lodge has truly brought out the membership and the work and help has been commendable. But – one member has truly stood out and gone above and beyond to help our lodge and I’m excited to have the October Elk of the Month be a member who immediately recognized we needed help, that he had the experience and time to help and jumped right in to help the lodge succeed
This long time member recognized the lodge needed a cook to continue providing our members food in our social quarters, something that helps the lodge meet its bottom line but also something that is a huge benefit to each and every member – a place to visit with friends and fellow members in a safe and comfortable environment with good food and drink to pass the time. Then, this member went above and beyond just helping fill a vacant cooks position and providing great eats but is also taking the time to help train new cooks and make sure the high standards he has created transfer on to our new employees – all as a volunteer.
Has the food been amazing recently? I know your answer is yes. You have Larry Gislason to thank for that. Yes, Larry is our Past Exalted Ruler Grims Gislason’s brother. I am honored and thankful to recognize the efforts by Larry Gislason for his loyal and meritorious services in the furtherance of the aims of our order. Larry has raised the bar for volunteering at the lodge while at the same time raising the bar on the quality of food served in the lounge!
We do what we do as Elks not for recognition or personal gain but for the greater and nobler good of the lodge and the community we live in. I know that these members didn’t step up and volunteer to be rewarded for their efforts but never the less we will thank these members and by doing so can develop a pool of eligible recipients for the coveted Elk of the Year Award given each year to the member who is always willing to help, the member our lodge can rely upon to step up and get things done.
Award recipients not only get an article in the Antlers, they receive a $12 gift certificate to our social quarters, an Elk of the Month certificate to pin on their wall and are in the running for Elk of the Year, awarded at the 2018/19 Officer Installation Dinner. You can find the nomination form on our website (ballardelks.org), fill it out as best you can and get it to our Exalted Ruler before the 19th of each month – email@example.com
Congratulations and thank you Larry – keep up the great work!
